Purpose
The purpose of the Legislative Affairs Committee is to ensure there is adequate and appropriate monitoring, lobbying, and oversight on federal, state, and local legislation and issues that could affect the SMCMA and its members. The committee should research, develop, and implement plans to achieve SMCMA’s legislative goals, including items such as partnering with local legislators and affiliated organizations, protecting the practice of medicine, and advocating for patient and community health.
The Legislative Affairs Committee works in tandem with SMPAC to support local candidates who share the SMCMA’s perspective to ensure elected officials promote legislation and regulations supported by SMCMA.
Composition
The Legislative Affairs Committee is comprised of SMCMA members who have maintained membership and are in good standing. Members of the Legislative Affairs Committee are also urged to remain involved in SMPAC affairs for continuity.
The Chair of the Legislative Affairs Committee is appointed by the SMCMA President and this Advisory Committee reports directly to the full SMCMA Board of Directors.
Responsibilities
- To conduct political action on behalf of the SMCMA.
- Promote the local influence of the SMCMA through building relationships with politicians, officials, and other public parties.
- Evaluate candidates for local, state, and federal offices representing the SMCMA community.
- Participate in legislative and advocacy events as identified, including CMA Legislative Advocacy Day.
